Dan Apfel is an experienced leader building power for a just and sustainable economy in the areas of responsible impact investment, finance and the new economy, and community economic development. He currently serves at the COO of Genesee Co-op Federal Credit Union, a respected Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) in Rochester, NY, serving 4,000 members. Genesee Co-op provides fair and affordable financial services to its members and also advocates on behalf of its members and community for a more equitable financial system.

Previously Dan held a variety of positions in the community economic development and impact investing space including as a Senior Associate at the Croatan Institute and independent consultant to foundations and nonprofits. He spent five years as the executive director of the Responsible Endowments Coalition, the leading voice for responsible investing in higher education, where he led a staff of five to support students, faculty, and administrators in advocating for and implementing responsible investment policies. Before becoming REC’s executive director, Dan was a Program Officer at the National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions, where he worked with credit unions serving diverse low- and moderate-income communities around the country. He managed a coalition of 16 credit unions running free tax-preparation sites that filed over 3,500 returns for low-income people in 200 and co-administered the New York State Coalition of Community Development Financial Institutions.

Dan’s work on responsible and impact investing has been covered in publications including the New York Times, the Financial Times, Bloomberg Businessweek, the Guardian, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Forbes, and Institutional Investor Magazine.

Dan has served in a variety of volunteer roles including on the boards of Alternatives Federal Credit Union, Alternatives Impact and Alternatives Fund, in Ithaca, NY. In his free time, you’re likely to find Dan sailing on Lake Ontario or cross country skiing on the trails in beautiful Western New York.

Dan holds a Masters in Public Administration from the Maxwell School at Syracuse University and a B.A. in History from the University of Rochester.
